The Freedom We Owed Each Other
When I decided to leave you, it wasn’t because I stopped loving you.
It was because you needed freedom, and I needed my sanity back.
When I stopped answering your messages and ignored your calls, my heart was slowly breaking. Every voicemail, every sound of your voice pulled me back to where we used to be.
I left out of love.
Not because I stopped loving you, but because you needed to be alone, and I needed to change everything around me. I needed to go somewhere you couldn’t follow.
I needed my freedom too.
The freedom to wake up in a new place, a new city, a new country, a new continent—and finally become myself again.
I needed to meet new people and have conversations in languages that were new to me. Even when I couldn’t understand what they were saying, I felt alive. I wanted to learn, to engage, and to simply be.
I had always wanted freedom.
The kind that gives without taking.
The kind that lets you get lost in places you’ve never been before, so far away from this, so far away from you.
When I decided to hand your freedom back to you, I remembered that love can give you wings, but it can also become a cage without either of you noticing.
That’s why I had to leave.
It was the only way to find myself.
And what I found was the part of me I had forgotten.
The part that had been forgotten simply because you were there.
When your presence disappeared, something inside me changed.
I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.
I left because I needed to love myself first.
Then second.
Then third.
Only then could I find the peace you could never give me.
So what I’m asking from you now is to let me go.
Let me be.
Set me free, just as I am giving your freedom back to you.
Maybe this was always meant to end this way.
Maybe we held on for far too long.
This is where we finally set each other free.
